The Northern Territory is a diverse area. Students come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Over 40% of 150 schools are in a remote or very remote location.
Teaching remote is a different teaching experience. It requires committed and highly skilled teachers with specific attributes. The Remote Teaching Service was established to support teachers in recognition of the challenges and rewards that brilliant teachers can gain from working in remote Indigenous schools.   • New teachers going to very remote localities under the DoE strategic plan are supported in undertaking a fully funded Graduate Certificate in TESOL Indigenous Education through Charles Darwin University. This course is offered through an intensive block and online study.

Relief Teacher Pay is tier based

Pay is dependent on the relief teacher’s years of experience as follows:

  • Tier 1: Less than 3 years experience will receive CT1 plus loading
  • Tier 2: 3-6 years will receive CT2 plus loading
  • Tier 3: More than 6 years will receive CT3 plus loading.

Relief Teacher Pay - NT

  • Tier 1 - less than 3 years experience $62,017pa, $49.53per hour,  $297.21 per day
  • Tier 2 - 3-6 years experience per year - $65,128, per hour $52.02, per day $312.12
  • Tier 3 - more than 6 years experience per year $68,239, per hour - $54.50 per day - $327.02

The relief teacher will receive a letter from will indicate the tier the teacher is to be paid at for that year. It is the relief teacher’s responsibility to notify the Recruitment

The Northern Territory Government provides 4WD training for teachers and educators who live in or regularly commute to remote locations and who drive a 4WD vehicle during the course of their employment. Staff can undertake 4WD training either when they start employment, through the Teacher Orientation program, or by a request to the department's Occupational Health and Safety Consultant.
